Leading by Design: Lead as Your Human Design Type

We don't teach what's popular. We teach what works. β¨
Most leadership advice is someone else's energy, written down. You read about a founder who wakes at 4 a.m., pitches every room, and makes calls in seconds. So you try it. Six months later you're running on fumes, and your team isn't following you any faster.
You don't have a discipline problem. You borrowed a design that was never yours.
That's the whole premise of Leading by Design, our Human Design leadership course. You lead best as your Type, not as your role model. Here's what that looks like in practice, plus a few things you can try this week.
π§ Your Type Is Your Leadership Operating System
Human Design groups people into five Types. Each one has a different way of using energy and making decisions.
The numbers matter here. Roughly 70% of people are Generators or Manifesting Generators. About 20% are Projectors. Manifestors make up around 9%, and Reflectors are close to 1%.
So when a Manifestor CEO writes a book about leadership, most readers have a completely different engine. Their advice works for them. It may quietly drain you.
Every Type has a Strategy. Think of it as a simple rule for moving through work without friction:
- Manifestors: Inform before you act. You start things. Your job is to tell people what's coming so they don't feel blindsided.
- Generators: Respond. Your best work comes from reacting to what's in front of you, not forcing ideas out of thin air.
- Manifesting Generators: Respond, then inform. You move fast and skip steps. Let people know before you pivot.
- Projectors: Wait for the invitation. Your guidance lands when people ask for it. Unrequested advice usually bounces off.
- Reflectors: Give big decisions time. A full lunar cycle, about 28 days, gives you real clarity.
None of these is better than the others. Each one is a different kind of leader.
πΌ The Role Model Trap
Let's make this concrete. Picture Maya, a Projector, promoted to head of operations. Her old boss was a Generator who powered through 12-hour days and loved jumping into every problem.
Maya copied him. She volunteered fixes in every meeting. She worked the same hours. Within a year she felt bitter and invisible, and her team tuned out half her suggestions.
Nothing was wrong with Maya. She was running a Generator playbook on Projector energy.
Human Design gives each Type a signal for when you're off track. We call it the not-self theme:
- Generators feel frustration.
- Manifesting Generators feel frustration and anger.
- Manifestors feel anger.
- Projectors feel bitterness.
- Reflectors feel disappointment.
When you're aligned, you feel the opposite: satisfaction, peace, success, or surprise, depending on your Type. Those feelings are data. Good leaders read data.
Once Maya shifted, things changed. She stopped volunteering fixes and started asking, "Do you want my take on this?" People said yes. Her ideas got adopted because they were invited.
π± Three Practices You Can Start This Week
You don't need a full chart reading to begin. Start small.
1. Track your signal for seven days. At the end of each workday, write one line. Did you feel your signature feeling or your not-self theme? Note what happened right before. By day seven, you'll see patterns. Most people find two or three recurring triggers.
2. Audit one recurring meeting. Pick your weekly team meeting. Ask how your Type would run it best. A Manifestor might send a short brief beforehand. A Generator might ask the team to bring options to react to. A Projector might open with questions and wait to be asked for input.
3. Rewrite one decision rule. Choose a decision you face often, like approving new projects. Then build your Strategy into it. A Reflector could set a rule that no major commitment gets signed in under two weeks. A Generator could decide only after checking for a clear gut yes or no.
These are tiny changes. They compound fast.
π€ Leading a Team of Different Designs
Here's where it gets interesting. Your team isn't one Type either.
In a team of ten, odds are seven are Generators or Manifesting Generators. Two might be Projectors. Maybe one is a Manifestor.
That changes how you delegate. Generators thrive when you bring them clear things to respond to. Projectors do their best work as guides and reviewers, especially when you recognize their insight out loud. Manifestors need room to initiate and fewer check-ins.
One client of ours stopped asking her Projector analyst to grind through data entry. She invited him to review the team's process instead. He found a fix that saved the team about six hours a week.
Same person. Different invitation. Very different result.
β―οΈ The Mini-Formula
Everything in the course comes back to one sequence:
Awareness β Authenticity β Action
- Awareness: Know your Type, your Strategy, and your signals.
- Authenticity: Drop the borrowed habits that drain you.
- Action: Lead in a way your energy can actually sustain.
Skip a step and it falls apart. Action without awareness is just more copying.
