Career Conversations: Talking Futures Without Making Promises
Career conversations aren't about predicting the future or making promises you can't keep. They're about creating clarity, possibility, and partnership. This 10-day course takes you from avoidance to confidence through the Awareness → Authenticity → Action formula: you'll understand what these conversations really accomplish, learn to have them without overpromising, and build a repeatable structure you can use with every person on your team.
Six shifts. One new you. 🌱
No scripts to memorize, just a flexible structure that works for any person at any level.
Learn the exact phrases that open futures without committing to outcomes you don't control.
What do you want? What scares you? What would make you leave? You'll ask them all.
By day 10, you'll have held a real career conversation with each person and captured their goals.
Scripts and frameworks for the moments when their ambition collides with reality.
Turn one good talk into ongoing development with a simple tracking and check-in rhythm.
- You manage people and avoid career conversations because you're scared of disappointing them or making promises
- You've had people resign and realized too late you never asked what they actually wanted
- You want to develop your team but don't know how to talk about growth when you can't guarantee promotions
- You're ready to replace vague 'keep doing great work' conversations with something that actually helps people
- ✕ You think career conversations are HR's job, not yours
- ✕ You're looking for scripts to promise people things and keep them quiet
- ✕ You believe talking about someone's future just makes them leave faster
A curriculum designed to move you 🧭
Days 1-3. Understand what these conversations actually accomplish, why avoiding them costs you talent, and how to separate development from promotion promises. You'll map your team's current career clarity and identify the conversations you've been postponing.
Days 4-6. Learn the five-part career conversation framework, practice the questions that surface real ambition, and master the language that creates possibility without false promises. You'll build your personal conversation guide.
Days 7-10. Hold structured career conversations with every direct report using your framework. You'll handle tough answers, document individual goals, and practice the follow-up rhythm that turns one conversation into ongoing development.
Woven throughout. Install career conversations as a regular practice, not a one-time event. You'll build a system for tracking progress, quarterly check-ins, and connecting daily work to individual growth paths.

The Exponential Coach 🤝
The Exponential Coach has spent 20 years helping managers become leaders people actually want to work for. With 1,500+ leaders trained across Europe and beyond, we've seen every version of the career conversation that goes wrong: the ones that overpromise, the ones that dodge the question, and the ones that never happen at all.
This course is built from real managers who learned to have career conversations that strengthen relationships instead of creating resentment. We don't teach corporate HR frameworks. We teach the honest, human conversations that help people grow whether or not a promotion is coming, and that keep your best people engaged even when the path up is blocked.
Growth, in their own words 💖

"I'd been avoiding career talks for a year because I had nothing to promote people into. This course taught me the conversation isn't about the promotion. I've now talked to all six of my reports and two of them are more motivated than ever, working on skills that matter to them. One is probably leaving, but now we're planning it together instead of me getting blindsided."
Priya K., Engineering Manager, Munich (composite student voice)
"Day 4 gave me the exact language I needed. I used 'I can't promise the role, but I can promise we'll build the skills' in a conversation two days later and the person's whole face changed. She went from frustrated to focused. I have a document now with what each person wants and we review it monthly."
Thomas V., Operations Lead, Brussels (composite student voice)
"The 'I want your job' scenario on Day 8 saved me. Someone said exactly that in our conversation and instead of panicking I used the framework. We mapped out what skills she needed, what exposure she was missing, and what would have to be true for her to be ready. She's still here, working on it, and I'm helping instead of hiding."

FAQ ☯️
What if I don't have promotion opportunities for my team?+
Then you need this course even more. Career conversations aren't about promising promotions. They're about understanding what people want, connecting their work to their goals, and helping them grow whether the next step is up, sideways, or eventually out. You'll learn how to have honest conversations that build loyalty even when the org chart is stuck.
What if someone says they want to leave during the conversation?+
You'll learn to handle that. Day 8 specifically covers what to do when ambition doesn't match reality, including the 'I'm planning to leave' answer. Sometimes the conversation helps you retain them by finding a path they didn't see. Sometimes it turns a sudden resignation into a planned transition. Either way, you're better off knowing.
How much time does each conversation take?+
30 to 45 minutes for the structured conversation, then 10 minutes quarterly for follow-up check-ins. You'll hold one conversation per day over the course, so by day 10 you're done with the whole team. The course teaches you to prepare in 15 minutes so you're not spending hours per person.
What if my company already has a performance review process?+
Good. This isn't a replacement for performance reviews. Career conversations are forward-looking and development-focused. Performance reviews are backward-looking and evaluation-focused. You'll learn to use both, and most managers find that having regular career conversations makes performance reviews easier because there are no surprises.
I'm not sure my team even wants to talk about their careers. What if they don't engage?+
Day 2 addresses exactly this resistance. You'll learn how to frame the conversation as partnership, not evaluation, and how to surface goals even from people who've never thought about them. The course includes questions that work even with 'I don't know' answers. Most managers are surprised by how much people open up once the conversation feels safe.
