Think in Decades: A Guide to Long-Game Decision Making

🚀 Your breakthrough starts with the next decision
Most business decisions feel urgent. Very few are.
We've coached over 1,500 leaders across two decades. The pattern repeats: the choices that hurt most were made to fix a single quarter.
Think in Decades exists to change that habit. You learn to judge a decision by where it puts you in 10 years, not by how it feels on a Friday afternoon. It sounds simple. It takes practice.
This post walks you through the core ideas from the course, with exercises you can try before lunch.
🧭 Short-term wins send long-term invoices
Picture a founder who offers a 30% discount to hit a monthly target. Revenue lands. The board relaxes. Then those customers expect 30% off forever, and margins never recover.
That's the trap. A quick win often carries a slow cost, and the bill arrives after everyone has forgotten the win.
Try this right now. List the last five significant decisions you made at work. Next to each one, write who benefits in 90 days and who benefits in 5 years.
If the 5-year column is mostly empty, you've found your pattern.
You aren't bad at strategy. You're responding to the loudest signal in the room. Usually that signal is a deadline, and deadlines rarely care about your next decade.
🌱 Compounding works on choices, too
Everyone understands compound interest with money. Fewer people apply it to relationships, skills, and reputation.
Get 1% better each day and you end the year roughly 37 times better than you started. Get 1% worse each day and you drop to about 3% of where you began. Small numbers. Huge gaps.
The same math runs your client relationships. Return one call late and nothing happens. Do it for two years and you lose the account without a single dramatic moment.
In the course, we help you map your compounding assets. These grow quietly when you feed them:
- Your reputation for keeping promises
- The depth of your top 20 professional relationships
- One rare skill you keep sharpening
- The systems that run without you
Pick one. Protect it from short-term trade-offs for the next 12 months. Then look at what changed.
Most leaders find that one protected asset does more for their business than a dozen clever tactics.
💼 The 10-10-10 filter for hard calls
When a decision feels heavy, run it through three time frames. How will you feel about it in 10 minutes? In 10 months? In 10 years?
A leader we worked with was deciding whether to let go of her top salesperson. He closed deals. He also treated colleagues badly.
Ten minutes out, firing him felt terrifying. Ten months out, the team would be healthier, but revenue would dip. Ten years out, nobody would remember the dip. They would remember the culture she chose.
She let him go. Revenue recovered in two quarters. Two of her strongest people later told her they had been ready to quit.
The filter doesn't make the choice for you. It strips out the panic so you can see the trade clearly. That clarity is the whole point.
🤝 Patience is a trainable skill
Long-game thinking isn't passive. You still move fast. You just move fast on the right things.
Three habits make the difference:
- Hold a quarterly decade review. Block 60 minutes. Ask where your current path leads in 10 years. Write the answer down and compare it to last quarter's.
- Name your non-negotiables. Decide in advance what you won't trade for a quick result. Pricing integrity, family dinners, a client's trust.
- Sort decisions by reversibility. Move fast on reversible ones. Slow down on irreversible ones. A new project tool? Pick one today. An equity partnership? Sleep on it for a week.
These habits feel slow at first. After a few months, they feel like relief. You stop relitigating the same choices because you made them well the first time.
☯️ The Decade Formula
Here's the mini-formula we teach in Think in Decades:
Pause → Project → Protect
- Pause. Give any significant decision a beat before you react. Even 24 hours changes the quality of most choices.
- Project. Push the decision forward 10 years. Picture the business, the team, and your own life on that path.
- Protect. Guard whatever compounds. Reputation, relationships, rare skills, and good systems come first.
Use it on one real decision this week. Keep it on a sticky note near your screen. The formula only works when it's in front of you at the moment of choice.
✨ Start thinking in decades
Your first move takes five minutes. Write down one decision you're facing right now. Run it through 10-10-10. Notice which answer surprises you.
